The Center for Advanced Research in Drying (CARD)
A National Science Foundation, Industry/University
Cooperative Research Centers Program
We are pleased to announce that the Center for Advanced Research in Drying, (CARD), had its Spring 2017 Center Meeting on May 16th and 17th, 2017 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. CARD is devoted to research in drying of moist, porous materials such as food and other agricultural products, forestry products, chemical products, biopharmaceuticals, textiles, etc.
The objective of CARD is to work on pre-competitive research focused on improving efficiency in drying and related heat/mass transfer processes (such as dewatering, baking, heating, cooling, freezing, frying, etc.) while improving the quality of finished products. CARD’s mission is to solve essentially industry-related fluid transport problems. We focus on building knowledge of underlying mechanisms for fluid transfer movements in products as well as to build energy-efficient technologies to assist in efficient drying while improving overall product quality.
At the same time, CARD is helping develop the next generation technical workforce by introducing novel educational opportunities for students attending the universities. Students perform the research and run the projects. This allows them to build their project management and applied research skills.
Projects chosen for funding at the previous Center Meeting were reviewed and 5 new potential projects were also introduced.
Center Meeting Results “By the Numbers:”
- 65 Total attendees – including Company Representatives, Faculty, Students, NSF and University Administrators
- 11 Attendees from our 9 Member companies
- 12 Attendees from our 10 Invited Guest Companies
- 15 Project presentations by students and faculty
- 9 Projects currently funded
The next CARD Center Meeting is at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 26th and 27th, 2017. Invited guests are always welcome.
We would be happy to talk with companies interested in CARD. Let us help you understand if this program can assist you in the Drying Technology space.
