Dr. Petros Sofronis to be Keynote Speaker at May Meeting

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Petros Sofronis of the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research at Kyushu University in Japan will be the Keynote Speaker at the CARD Spring IAB Meeting on May 18, 2023. Professor Sofronis’ research focuses on structural materials behavior under adverse chemomechanical environments. His work addressed mechanisms underlying creep resistance of materials, dislocation defect interactions, and hydrogen-induced degradation at low and high temperatures. Dr. Sofronis is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He has received awards from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Ford Motor Company, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

He is also a member of the I2CNER program originating in Japan. I2CNER’s approach to creating an energy vision for Japan with targeted CO2 emission reductions will be presented based on an array of promising technologies. This includes solid oxide fuel cells, polymer membrane-based fuel cells, biomimetic and other novel catalyst concepts, and production, storage, and utilization of hydrogen as a fuel. I2CNER’s research also explores the underlying science of CO2 capture and storage technology or the conversion of CO2 to a useful product.
